How it's done

Arrange a small table or desk surface where your elf can "work." Position the elf seated at the table with a piece of paper in front and colored markers or crayons scattered nearby. Draw a simple doodle-style self-portrait on the paper beforehand — the elf's face in a playful, childlike manner. Add more art supplies around the scene to show creative chaos. Consider posting the artwork on a nearby wall or fridge so children discover the elf's "artistic achievement" first thing in the morning.

Pets in the house?

Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.

Why this works

Living-room scenes are the most photogenic. The Christmas tree, the couch, the mantel all frame the elf beautifully for the family photo you'll actually take (and maybe post). At difficulty 1, this scene is specifically designed to be set up in under two minutes. Busy nights are why this one exists.

Variations

  • Bigger-kid twist: For an older crowd that sees through simple scenes, step up to Canvas Self Portrait Art — same room, cleverer setup.

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy") — the discovery is the point.
