Candy Cane Hunt Setup

How it's done

Hide several candy canes throughout an accessible area like a room or hallway, placing some in obvious spots and others requiring minor searching. Write or print a scavenger hunt note from the elf and position it prominently where children will find it first. Place the elf partway through the hunt area, as if it has already started looking for or hiding the candy canes.

Pets in the house?

Candy canes are sugar-heavy and can splinter if a pet chews them.

Why this works

Living-room scenes are the most photogenic. The Christmas tree, the couch, the mantel all frame the elf beautifully for the family photo you'll actually take (and maybe post). Difficulty 2 means it uses items you already own and takes about five minutes — quick but visibly intentional.

Variations

  • Pet-safe version: Try Buddy Four Food Groups — same idea, but no chocolate, loose candy, or floor-level hazards. Swap the elements that worry you and keep the rest.
  • Bigger-kid twist: For an older crowd that sees through simple scenes, step up to Canvas Self Portrait Art — same room, cleverer setup.

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy") — the discovery is the point.
