How it's done

Cut a hole in a wrapped gift box and position the elf inside with its head poking through the hole. Place a customized arrival letter beside the box with the children's names. This can be personalized with the elf's name. The element of surprise makes this an engaging welcome-back moment.

Pets in the house?

Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.

Why this works

Entryway scenes are high-traffic and time-flexible — the elf greets arrivals whether it's 7am breakfast or a 4pm return from school. This mid-difficulty scene trades a little more setup time for a bigger 'wow' moment when your kids walk in.

Variations

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy") — the discovery is the point.
