How it's done

Wrap the elf entirely in aluminum foil with a paper strip tag poking out the top to look like a giant Hershey Kiss. Set him on a plate for display.

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy") — the discovery is the point.
